Catch-all domain

Why a catch-all domain makes email verification inconclusive and what to do with those addresses.

A catch-all domain, also called accept all, is configured to accept mail sent to any address at that domain, including addresses that do not exist. Verification tools cannot confirm an individual mailbox there, so results come back as risky or unknown rather than valid.

What it is

Some organizations tell their mail server to accept everything at the domain rather than reject unknown recipients, usually to avoid losing mail sent to a misspelled name. The side effect is that the server stops distinguishing real mailboxes from invented ones during the SMTP conversation. A verification check asks whether a specific mailbox exists and the server answers yes for every address it is asked about, which makes the answer worthless as evidence.

Mail can still be silently discarded after acceptance, so a message to a nonexistent name may vanish with no bounce and no reply.
